My BIL finally got hitched! (On Halloween...altho no one really cares in Korea)

Lord oh lord was it a 'jung-shin-up-suh' day (hectic...w/ a capital H) !!!

I dunno why, but Korean weddings are so complicated...and if u have them in a 'wedding hall' it multiplies the 'chaos' by 100. Add to that the horrible weather (raining cats and dogs)...and there u have it~

Whew~ I'm just glad it's over. And thankful we have no more 'big' family events for a loooong time!

My hubby was so busy greeting guests, working the front desk (accepting gift $), taking care of family, etc...that eventho he brought his DSLR...he was only able to take a handful of pictures I was bummed about that because it's very few and far between that i take the time to get dolled-up. Now i only have 3-4 pics w/ my kids and family of that day. (( Note to SELF - No matter how crazy it is...always make sure u leave w/ LOTS of pics from a special occassion!) Really....pictures are the only things that last ~ And they're the only 'things' u are 'left' with. Come to think of it...i don't even have any pics of Theo...cause he was asleep most of the time : (

Anyway, here are a few that i can share...

(My parents flew in from NC to be w/ Me and the kids. Long story short...i was 1. worried that i'd get sick from chasing after both kids during the whole ceremony (mohm-sal) and 2. Hubby is on a business trip for a week in Beijing and i've neeeever been alone w/ both kids before. So after a few 'whiny' phone calls to the folks...out of the goodness of their hearts...they booked a flight...and here they are! Parents are the best, aren't they? (i'm talkin' about chinjung's NOT she-daeks/inlaws). This is also part of the reason i've been so busy lately and neglected my xanga~)

(My hair&makeup...i loved it! i got a 출장 artist...they come to your home...to come to our place to primp me for the event. i think the most important thing when it comes to these kinds of things...is to have a strong opinion/idea about 'what it is' that u want. i showed her several pics (research)...and tada...i got exactly what i was hoping for~ What do u guys think???)

(My hanbok. A very traditional 'hyung-nim' look...hehe~ I picked every detail. It's harder than one would think. You wouldn't believe how many red's and navy's there are to choose from! AT first i didn't know if i wanted to go 'traditional' OR 'fusion'...but after some research...i thought that this look was best ^^ )

Thanks HDYDI Readers. Because of you, I can write this down and HOPEFULLY I’ll finally, FINALLY remember it. You don’t know how many times I’ve smacked myself in the head a la “Shoulda hadda V8″ as I’m reminded of this tip.

So read and learn, peeps. Don’t be me. Smacking yourself while driving is just not safe.

OK. Today. The morning naps were over and Sarah was clamoring for her 18th snack of the day. “Not plain old raisins, Ma, YOGURT COVERED RAISINS!”

“YOGURT COVERED RAISINS!”

“YOGURT COVERED RAISINS, B$#%H!”

We were housebound yesterday because of the leftover typhoon that hit the west coast and I guess I was still feeling the after effects of early onset cabin fever, because I was seriously over it. Motherhood, that is. I was just languishing about in a sea of toys and half crushed Kix, watching Matthew try to smash his sippy cup through the window and listening to Sarah screech about the raisins. I was frozen in a hellacious moment and hating life. I even got that, “Should I be a SAHM?” feeling. (Don’t worry, I shook that off with a quickness.)

I had put a rain cover for the BOB on hold at our local REI, and since I couldn’t walk to the grocery store as planned because of the DOWNPOUR, I figured this was as good a time as any to go pick it up.
Two seconds into the car ride all was well with the world. They were singing and laughing and dancing in their carseats and I was singing and laughing and dancing right along with them. I was Happy Mom again!
This is where the self-smackdown came in. The Reset Button! Duh. Whether it’s a major tantrum or just midday doldrums, changing things up with a walk, or a trip the backyard, or a ride in the car will make all the difference in the world. Like so many other parenting tips, this one seems pretty damn obvious, but in the moment? It’s anything but. I just find it so easy to get sucked into the whinyness, the discontent and the overall crankiness and it’s like quicksand. So….Hard….To…Get….Out….

I think I need to put up post-its all over the house that say “Reset Button” or even better, “Change it up, Dummy!” because I can never seem to remember! It’s usually only out of desperation that I actually implement a change, not out of smart parenting.

It happened again later, too. We’re not really sure what caused Sarah’s evening tantrum aside from a boycotted afternoon nap, but she screamed for a good 20 minutes. Actually it might have been longer, but I went for a run. My husband said he changed her diaper and put her in the crib for a good ole’ fashioned cage match with her brother and she was a new person. Giggling like you wouldn’t believe and generally acting like nothing had happened.

RESET! Remember it, friends.

Theo's baby class!

Theo's been attending the 문화센터 for a while now (it's called a Cultural center = sorta like a Community center that offers various classes at great rates).

I LOVE it~

Not only does this place offer baby classes, they offer classes for kids of all ages (after school), and for adults. I can't wait for Theo to go to preschool...so i can take cooking/baking,art, flower arrangement, sewing, dancing lessons!!!

Anyway, for the Fall session, we're taking a class called Teeni-teeni kids? or something like that : ) The teacher is a male (a first for us) but he's sooo great w/ the kids...AND he's funny too. The kids get to learn about a certain subject and get a work-out all at the same time. It's great for kids that are really physically active!

Anyway, so on this particular day, the kids learned about a korean folktale called 은독기,금독기 (Silver ax, Gold ax). All the kids are carrying a 지개 (item used to carry gathered wood) and placing the wood in the Oven. keke~ Everything is made out of sponge/styrofoam!

Can't leave w/o sharing a pic of my Big baby Devin~ Goofing around in his dongseng's pack-n-play (man, we sure are getting our $'s worth outta that thing). And D. taking a pic next to the big icecream cone. Jeez, this kid is an ice-cream-killer! he LOVES ice cream!

Oh and this is 고아라 (Ara Ko). she's a young actress that was shooting a scene for her recent MBC drama = 맨땅에헤딩 . This is right next to our apt. building~

Man...this past month has been craaaaazy!

I've been meaning to update on my flight back to korea...but so much has gone on since we got back...this past month just seems like it has flown by. I've missed u guys (BUT...i have been reading your posts...and commenting when i can)!

So...what's been going on w/ us lately???

1. It took us a good 2 weeks to 'naturally' get over the jetlag. I find it takes babies 2 weeks to adjust to the time difference on their own (from lots of experience w/ international flights). I could adjust to the time diff. on my own, but what would be the point...when i'm really on 'baby' time and have to move according to 'that' clock. It's just best not to mess w/ nature on this one. Theo took about 2 weeks. And Devin took just 1 week!

2. Devin went right back to his preschool after 1 week of staying at home bored to death (and getting over jetlag). Since we went back to the same school, same teacher, same class, and same friends...there was no adjustment there : ) BTW, last year his schedule was 9-2:30pm...and this year it's 9:30-3:50pm. However...per his own request...D's been going to 종일반/all day class since last week (mainly for the Moms that work)...they stay a lil later than the reg. kids. I'm really like Hitler when it comes to naps and children getting over tired...so i like it that D. came home earlier. But for some reason, for the past couple of weeks, he's been begging us to attend the 종일반...so after some thought and discussion we decided to agree...but will watch him closely to make sure he's not too tired. So now, D.'s schedule is 9:30am -5:30pm. I know that's like a normal daycare schedule in the States and its not like a big deal or anything, but it's just a really big deal for our family : )

3. Theo is attending a new Cultural center class for the fall. It's awesome. Very physically active for both kids and Mommy! (kinda like Gymboree, but more FUN)! I would like for him to attend at least 1 more class a week, BUT with the Swine Flu epidemic here...it's just a lil scary to be going to too many 'crowed' places regularly. Korea is so freakin' over-populated...any disease is easily spread. I can't remember the exact statistics, but when i flew back in August and watched the news...they were saying that in a matter of a couple of weeks, the original 50 known patients to have caught Swine flu had gone to like 600+ some people! Isn't that crazy??? And it's supposed to get worse during the Fall mths (in the US and Korea)! ack~

4. My BIL is getting married at the end of this month. This is a veeeeery big deal for our family, but personally for ME as well. For so long, i've been the ONLY DIL...and while there is pressure...it's not as much as will be come Oct.31st when i get a new "sister in law"???hmmm...actually i dunno what u call that relationship?? In korea she will be my 동서/dong-suh. I am her Hyung-nim ~ She's actually dated my BIL for a long time and we knew they would get married eventually. So now the time has come. We've just been busy getting ready, getting our new hanboks made (which i am dreading wearing...it's soooo hard taking care of a baby when u have a hanbok on)...i bought a new suit (to change into after the hanbok)...normally u have to keep wearing the hanbok but i told my inlaws how uncomfortable i'd be so the FIL offered to buy that as well. Now i just have to book my Hair&makeup person and i'm set.

Wait a minute! isn't Oct. 31st Halloween??? ack!

Anyway, i get along w/ my soon-to-be 동서 and hopefull it'll stay like that. We'll see. There is a lil past drama between Hubby and my BIL...hmmm...only time will tell. : ) Do any of you other ladies have Hyung nims OR Dong suhs ???

So anyways, here are some pics of the Boys this past month:

puhahaha...D. is getting in trouble for something and so we make him do the 'old school korean time out hands raised thing'...and suddenly oneday T. went to the same spot and raised his hands too. Kekeke~ I had to take a pic!

On our way to Costco...i heart Costco! BTW, i got 'Volume magic straight perm' last week. Lord have mercy! i haven't had straight hair for almost 5 yrs (i am NOT exaggerating)! ever since D. turned 100 days old...i've only gotten wavy perms. It's so weird having straight hair again ; ) I decided to go w/ the volume magic cause i don't like stick straight hair, and this particular perm has a curve at the ends~

(A tourist attraction near our home...it's called 평화랜드/peaceland? It's actually located reeeeeally close to the North Korea border~ a little too close for comfort?! The train is coin-operated...so cute. Doesn't the paddle boat look fun?)

A quick weekend trip to the beach...both boys digging in the sand : ) It was such a nice day out!

Hehehe...know what they're doing? Both boys have their own Nintendo DS's ! Eventhough Theo is waaay younger than his big bro...he still wants to do whatever it is he's doing! *sigh* D's pretty good, but T. has no idea what he's doing ; )

Next time, i'll update on my crazy*ss flight back to Korea!

Man, this jet lag is killin' me...and while i need to do a post on our 'flight' back to the Motherland...

This article is in Korean...so for those of you that can read it...u can see for yourselves...BUT for those of you that can't...

Well, the jist of it is....a child in China was thought to have had a disease...or very least a tumor growing inside of her stomach...but ultrasounds proved that another 'BABY' was growing inside of her! Every once in a while u hear of similar stories, but they end up being a malformation of a twin that really won't survive OR it's just 'cells' of something that 'tried' to become of baby but was just a lump of stem cells that won't become human~

Well....this is a real baby...that is growing...and will eventually grow full term!!! Ack~

D - 4 days till our flight back to Korea! (we leave on Friday)

wow...so our trip back to the States is nearly up! It's been a "bitter-sweet" trip to say the least.

I know i say this all the time (and in every entry where i talk about my trips back home), but once you're married...and esp. after you have babies...a woman comes to realize the special bond and appreciates her own parents on more of a deeper level.

I was/am so grateful to be able to fly back and forth so often to see my own folks...and i love the interaction my kids have w/ their grandparents. It's all so wonderful.

BUT....

at the same time, i am glad to be going back to my 'own' home (to my own bed, where i have all my own stuff)...oh yeah...and back to the Hubs...keke And i am READY for D. to go back to school! 2 mths of watching both kids all day is killing me~ Devin needs more interaction. I give props to the moms of 2-3 young babies at home at the same time! whew. just thinking about it makes me break into a sweat!

Yup, so i've just been running errands, tying up loose ends, and buying last minute items.

*sigh* I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO MY FLIGHT. my 1st plane is at 7:10am. Everytime i fly now, i think about the good 'ole days...back before 9/11...when there was little to no airport security...and we didn't have ridiculous lines and waiting periods....and friends and family members could see us to our actual gates. We sure had it good bck then. I hate that life is less 'innocent' now

anyway, wish us luck! may our flight be as drama-free as possible!!!

Long awaited Dentist visit ~

Yay!!!

We finally went to T's dental appointment at the University's Pediatric ward. The 3 weeks were like slow torture! The Dr. originally wanted to wait 4 weeks...but i was like : "No no no...can u puhleez see us sooner than that?"

You all know how Moms are. I was DYING to know how his teeth were doing! And since i'm no expert...just looking into his mouth (4 times a day for his medicine and teeth cleanings/소독) wasn't cutting it.

I knew what to look for, in case it wasn't going well - discoloration, redness, swelling, etc.

But thank GOD we had none of that.

The Dr's initial expression upon inspection + her final diagnosis was like music to my ears!

Theo's teeth were doing even better than she had anticipated. And there is no discoloration. The teeth were re-setting nicely...and were firm to the touch (altho there is still a lot of jiggle here and there...compared to 'normal' teeth).

My only question for the Doc was: "When will he be able to bite down on a hard cookie again?"

Answer: Be extra careful for another 3 mths (and 'slightly' careful for about a total of 6 mths)!

I know a lot of people hear that answer and are shocked...but w/ the research i did...i knew that was an average amount of time...so no suprise there. I'm just super happy/relieved that he will not be losing his teeth! Thank you God!

And thank you Xanga mommies for all of your prayers! i really do believe in the power of prayer! Both my boys are doing well (they actually have another Dr's appt. tomorrow~)...and are healing nicely! My nerves however are SHOT to hell...keke~ I'm sure that'll take a lil more time

(at the Dentist's office...it was such an early appt. that Theo was still in his nae-bok..puhaha. But the Dr's had no idea they were jammies! They were all like: "gosh, we love ur lil outfit!" )

And the stitches are out...

Hallelujah! The stitches came out!

Theo's accident was on 7/20 (a monday nite)...and he was scheduled to go back the following Monday to get the sutures removed. Well (on 7/27)...after a traumatic visit to the Dr's...we only got 2 out of 7 stitches removed...ANDDD we had to go back in two days to get the remaining 5 taken out (apparently it was not healed all the way and needed more time).

We decided to go back in 72hrs instead...and T. got the remaining 5 stitches taken out on 7/30

Lord...as if the actual accident wasn't scary and painful enough...each following trip to the hospital was even more traumatic for my poor baby!

Each time, they would strap him in this contraption called a PAPOOSE (which is like a straight-jacket for kids = surf board w/ fabric-velcro straps to keep child down)...and 1 Doctor and 2 nurses would do the procedures. Even w/ the papoose and that many adults...they still took FOREVER to do/un-do the sutures (The staff was commenting how they thought T. might turn green in a second or two....like the Incredible Hulk...because he was so strong~)

God puh-leez...no more accidents...no more injuries...no more hurting!!! (i've aged 20 yrs this past month- 10 yrs per child). i don't think my heart can take much more

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR CONTINUED THOUGHTS & PRAYERS!!!

(My Burger Kings! puhaha~ I stopped by Burger King the other day and saw these paper crowns. It totally reminded me of my childhood....i used to play with the same crowns back 25+ years ago! Totally brings me back! Andddd makes me feel real old at the same time~)

I can't thank all of you separately (it takes SOOOOOO much work taking care of a hurt/sick child)! But i wanted to take this time to express how much all of your thoughts, prayers, kind words mean to me and my family

It honestly takes such a hard toll on the whole family when someone is sick or hurt (esp. when it's a baby who can't do any of the care by themselves). Devin is doing a lot better and we're just trying to concentrate on not hurting the wound area (he still gets blood blisters on the wound spots, eventhough the exterior skin has healed, when the deeper skin gets bumped/scratched it blisters up because it's not 100% healed underneath).

Theo is the one who is suffering the most. *sigh* The interior laceration is healed completely. And his gums no longer have the open-wound-redness anymore. But his outer lip laceration stitches have not healed yet (we went back to the Dr's to have the sutures removed and the poor kid got 2 stitches out of the 7 removed...only to find that it wasn't closed up all the way). The freakin' DR & nurses put Theo through all that mental trauma and he didn't even get all of the stitches taken out. ARGH !!!! Couldn't they tell it wasn't healed all the way just from examination? anyway, so the kid was understandably freaked out...AND we have to go back in a couple days to do it all over again ~

Plus, since his 'teeth' aren't healed yet (and apparently won't be for a few mths)...we are extra cautious when he's playing. Hmmm..."cautious" is a conservative word. I am practically PHOBIC when he's walking around. I basically have him in the baby carrier ALL DAY...no joke. And when i let him down...i let him walk about 2 steps....break out in a cold sweat...and pick him back up again. He is sooooooo dap-dap-hae (i'm suffocating him). BUT it's only because 'teeth' are such a sensitive area. The Dentist said that if he has one more fall/trauma to his teeth they can't be saved.

So anyway that's what we've been up to this week.

And we have to go back to the DR's to get his stitches removed tomorrow. Wish us luck! Hopefully his stitches will be totally healed by then~

Thank you so much guys! Really all of your thoughts and prayers and words of encouragement mean so so much to me! In this really hard time...it's so warming to know that both my kids have such wonderful Eemos's all across the US sending them warm vibes! hehehe~ Thank you again. I really do believe in the power of prayer...and already...i feel much more peace in my heart!

I don't know where to start...or what to say...this month...has just been the most traumatic..stressful...scary month of my whole life.

As some of you have noticed, i haven't been as active on Xanga as i would like to be. I've just been so busy picking up the pieces...there has been NO time for the computer! The reason I haven't been updating or commenting is because w/in about a 3 week period....BOTH of my boys were involved in major accidents (separately)!

1. Devin was running around w/ his cousin outside and knocked a tooth loose. After a visit to a pediatric dentists...they found that he was fine. BUT this wasn't the only thing to come~

2. On the 4th of July weekend (which was only about 2 days AFTER his first accident above), we were invited to a friend's house for dinner and fireworks. The adult men set up fireworks in the backyard and the rest of us stood back to watch. Long story short, a bottle holding a 'bottle-rocket' fell over and shot towards the crowd. It hit Devin. It all happened w/in a split second...too fast for any adults to react...and by the time it was all over...Devin had 2nd degree burns on both his arms, lower face, cheeks, nose & his eyebrows, eyelashes, sideburns, bangs were singed ! We immediately took him to a Children's Emergency Room and he was seen right away (apparently burn vicitms are first priority). It's almost 3 weeks since all of this has happened and he still has not 'completly' healed. He has regulary visits to the UNC Burn Center and they say he's doing well (he sure is a trooper, that's for sure). He will have permanant scars on his lower cheek and both arms and will most likely need plastic surgury (laser work) to lessen them : ( But the doctors say we should wait close to a year before doing such work.

3. As if (above stated incident) wasn't bad enough...we had another accident on Monday night (this week). With Devin's accident...it's sort of a given that fireworks are dangerous. BUT with Theo's accident...it just came straight out of nowhere! On monday night, as were were winding-down. I had given T. his last bottle of the day (yes, he still drinks milk from a bottle. altho he does drink from regular cups and straw cups). At about 7pm he had finished off his bottle and walked/ran after his Hyung all while holding onto the bottle. He took about 4-5 steps in the living room and fell...his mouth landing straight on the bottle. He got up crying and we couldn't tell what was wrong. Until he started gushing blood everywhere! My mind was racing. I was crying / screaming...trying to hold it together and get him to the emergency room. We got him to the closest emergency room (about 15 miles) to find out that he had (1. a large cut on his bottom lip that needed stitches/sutures, 2. a large cut on the inside of that lip...aparently from the impact from his teeth...3. He had knocked his front top left tooth AND the tooth beside it reaaaaalllly loose...his gums were messed up). After waiting an 1hr and a half to be seen...he had to have 7 stitches on his lower lip. They said the 'inside' of the mouth didn't require sutures and that they heal on their own...And the ER doctor had to call the Emergency Pediatric Dentist on call to ask about his teeth. The Dr on call said to immediately come for an appt. first thing in the morning. Long story short, we had to got to the University of north carolina's Pediatric Dentristry Hospital to have his teeth checked out. His condition was more serious than what a regular ped. dentist could handle. *sigh* Thank God the 3 dentists that saw him all agreed that it looked like his teeth could be saved and that we had to really take care of him for the next 2-4 weeks.

After all of this scary drama. I'm left w/ 4 thoughts :

1. I'm obviously still in the the trenches w/ the medical things that need to be done for both my boys. BUT i wanted to share w/ all of you Mommies out there, so that u can learn from us, and possibly avoid the events that occured with us. It's really hard for me to take this time...and share my heartache...but if it helps one person...

- NEVER, EVER play with fireworks! I don't care if it's the 4th of July. I know that fireworks are sold at every major big box store like its not dangerous or something, BUT IT IS! If you're in the festive mood and want to celebrate the holiday, then watch it on TV. Ask yourself, 'Is it worth my child's safely / health? And can i be 200% sure that nothing will go wrong?' my bet, u can never be 100% sure..So just don't do it !

2. If you have to go the Emergency Room or seek serious medical care....If at all possible, take your child to a "Children's Emergency Room." The care is just plain hands-down different. Devin was taken to a Children's emergency room, while Theo was taken to a regular ER. Now, looking back, i wish i had driven the extra 20 minutes to take him to the Children's ER(because he was bleeding so badly, i just kept thinking closer is better). The Dr's demeanor, their comments, their special attention to the children, the medical care, ALL OF IT... a pediatric specialist is a 'specialist' for a reason. Theo's Dr. was competant...but she just looked so nervous doing his sutures...it made ME nervous looking at her. I needed someone who was confident. Theo's Dr. just did her job, in/out...that was it. With Devin...the nurses brought him a coloring book, a special bear that he could keep...to comfort him...and the whole staff tried to talk to him and sooth him. We got NONE of that w/ the regular ER !!!

3. NEVER let your child walk w/ a hard object in their hand (ever)! Like us, it doesn't matter 'what' that object is...OR...'where' it is. Theo was holding his baby bottle (not a sharp object). And he was in the carpeted living room (not on concrete OR outdoors). This means regular items like bottles, cups, spoons, toys, etc. Who knew that a baby bottle could be so deadly? The head Dentist/Doctor at the Pediatric dentistry school was also a professor (who is close to 70yrs old i think). Can u believe he asked me if he could use Theo's case as a study...and if he could take pictures? Why? Because in all of his years...he's NEVER heard/seen such an accident. ARgh! Can u believe this. He says most babies that have similar injuries come from the coffee table. *sigh* Why my baby? You know Tom Cruises' daughter Suri uses the same bottle as Theo and she was still drinking from it at 2 1/2. Did she ever have an accident like this? *sigh* I think : "should i have weaned him sooner?" But it's not about that because he could have just as easily fallen on a sippy cup. All cups are hard! As u all can imagine, i'm terrified of cups now...and just feel like giving him drinks that come in tetra packs (like Organic milk & capri-sun)!

4. Both my children have permanant scars on their bodies. They both had serious accidents w/ in a 3 week period (the month of July was not a good month). I honestly feel like i'm jinxed! I mean, if u were Me, what would u think? I keep going over these events over and over. Thinking what i could've done to avoid them. I think: "Why God, why MY children? And Why not me?" Millions of people every year play w/ fireworks w/out harm. Gazillions of babies walk w/ their bottles and don't get into accidents. why my baby??? Why GOD??? My mom keeps telling me not to ask why...not to blame God...and to thank Him...because it could've been much worse. And i do thank Him...that things weren't worse. BUT the state my children are in now...I...i can't help but to want an anwer...any answer. I'm so exhausted....mentally, physically. And terrified of the future (who know when one of my children will get hurt again?). My husband is a nervous wreck. Without being able to 'see for himself' the extent of the injuries...from millions of miles away...he just wants me to pack up camp and come back to Korea : (

I read somewhere this quote:

We trust the truth of Jesus’ words in response to his disciples’ question, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus replies that "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me.” (John 9:2-4)

Maybe this event transpired...by God's will...so that God's will can be displayed in our lives...so that others may see.

But at this point...right here in the now...It's not much of a consolation. Maybe more prayer will give me peace.

I ask that you please pray for both Devin and Theo (if u are so inclined)...that their scars are minimal. That both may heal w/o infection. That these events were not too mentally scarring. And that T's teeth will heal up and be as close to normal as possible!
